At the beginning of the month I posted in my July Goals an objective to write out a few particular doctrinal summaries.

This is a class assignment, but I cannot reiterate how important it is to know what we believe on specific areas of theology. This is huge ladies! What do you believe about your God, your Jesus, your Abba? Is he someone you associate with Sunday mornings, a hymn, or is there more to what you believe? How do you articulate what you believe- do you have a grammar of faith that is testified through the word of God?

One’s doctrinal summaries should primarily be informed by Scripture- as such I have taken measures to put specific scripture passages in parathesis for further review. Here it is- my doctrine of God….

As a finite creature, this doctrine of God will surely be lacking as it references an infinite God. I believe that God is triune, Father, Son and Holy Spirit. The Son of God is eternally begotten. He is not made by the Father or a creature of the Father, but wholly part of the Godhead. He is one in being; the same substance (John 1, 3).

The Trinity is essential to a doctrine of God as the unique and exclusive claims of the Christian faith stand or fall on the doctrine of the Trinity.  The trinity opposes theological pluralism and directly affects our theology proper and soteriology. It also influences the formulations of other doctrines such as: christology, pneumatology, soteriology, ecclesiology, worship, and prayer. I believe that God is One (Mark 12:29ff.; 1 Cor. 8:4-6). The Father is God (John 6:27; 1 Pet. 1:2). The Son is God (Phil. 2; Col. 1; John 1; Heb. 1; John 5:18; 10:30). The Spirit is God (Acts 5:3-4; 1 Cor. 3:16). The Son is distinct from the Father (Matt. 11:27; 27:46; John 5:20-22). The Spirit is distinct from the Father and the Son (Joh 14:16; 16:7ff). God is personal and knowable, triune, perfect in all His attributes and actions (Psa. 145:3, Psa. 147:5, Rom. 11:33, Jer. 9:23-24, 1 John 2:13). God is uncaused, sufficient, self-existent, self-dependent, independent, immutable, impassable, indivisible (simple, not composed of parts) and underived (Psa 90:2, Isa 43:10, Exo 3:14, Malachi 3:6, James 1). God is the only one to be worshipped and it is he through which brings salvation. He is particular in that there are no other gods outside of himself and a jealous God in that he demands there to be no worship of idols  (Deut 6:4; 4:35, 39, Isa 45:22, Mark 12:32, John 10:30, 1 Cor 8:6, Eph 4:5-6).

God is infinite, immeasurable, and immense (Psa. 145:3, Job 11:7,9, Isa. 66:1, 1 Kings 8:27, Rom. 11:33, 1 Kings. 8:27, Ro. 8:39). He is omnipresent and is not limited (Psa. 139:7, Psalm 46:1, Jer. 23:23-24, Acts 17:27-28, Rom 8:39, Isa 57:15, Jer 23:23, Psa 33:13-14, Prov 15:3). He is omnipotent (possesses all power) and omniscient (Matt. 10:29, Acts 15:8, Psa. 139:2, Psa. 147:5, Matt. 6:8, Isa. 46:9-10, Isa. 44:28, 1 Sam. 23:12, Acts 15:18, John 21:17, Heb 4:12-13, 1 John 3:20).

He is eternal (Psa. 90:2, Psa. 102:27, 1 Tim. 1:17, 1 Tim. 6:16, Rev. 1:8), without error (Matt. 5:48, Psa. 18:30) and is Life (Jer 10:10, Psa 42:2; 84:2, Matt 16:16, 1 Thess 1:9, Acts 17:25).

God is not matter, nor is He dependent on matter (John 4:24, Rom. 1:20, 1 Tim. 1:17, Col. 1:15).

In reference to the doctrine of creation, I affirm that creation was a free act of the triune God. He created the entire universe from ex Nihilo (out of nothing). He also created every creature, for purposes of his own and for His glory. (Gen1:1-2:4, Jn 1, Rom 4:17, Col. 1, Heb 11:3, Rev 4:11).
